Definition

Depth of field is an essential concept in photography. It refers to the area of sharpness in an image, i.e. the part of the photo that appears sharp and clear. The depth can vary depending on different parameters, such as the aperture of the lens, the distance between the subject and the background, the distance between the camera and the subject, the focal length of the lens used and the size of the camera sensor.

Parameters playing on depth of field

The opening of the objective

The opening of the lens is one of the most important parameters to control the depth of field. A large aperture (small number f/) will make it possible to obtain a shallow depth, with a sharp subject and a blurred background. Conversely, a small aperture (large number f/) will give a great depth, with a greater area of sharpness in the image.

The distance from the subject and the background

The distance between the subject and the background can also influence the depth of field. The greater this distance, the more the area of sharpness will be. If you want to isolate your subject from the rest of the image, it is advisable to place the subject at a considerable distance from the background.

The distance between the device and the subject

The distance between the device and the subject is another factor to take into account. The shorter this distance, the smaller the depth will be. It is therefore important to properly evaluate the distance between you and your subject to obtain the desired effect.

The focal length of the lens used

The focal length of the lens used can also influence the depth of field. Fixed-length lenses with a large aperture (such as a 50mm f/1.8) are often used to obtain a pronounced bokeh and a shallow depth. Telephoto lenses can also produce a beautiful background blur effect.

The size of the device’s sensor

The size of the device’s sensor can also play a role in the depth of field. Devices with a smaller sensor tend to have a greater depth, while those with a larger sensor can produce a shallow depth effect more easily.

How to calculate the depth of field?

No mathematical calculation

Calculating the depth of field may seem complex, but it is not necessary to do complicated mathematical calculations. The best way to master this depth is to practice and experiment with the different settings of your camera.

Online calculators

If you prefer to have an accurate estimate of the depth, there are online calculators that can help you. Simply enter the relevant information, such as the lens aperture, the focusing distance and the focal length, and the calculator will give you an estimate of the area of sharpness.

What goal to use to have a nice bokeh?

A fixed focal length with a large aperture

To obtain a nice bokeh, it is recommended to use a fixed focal length with a large aperture. 50mm lenses with an f/1.8 aperture are very popular for this effect. They make it possible to obtain a shallow depth of field and a pleasant background blur.

A telephoto lens

Telephoto lenses are also very popular to create a pronounced bokeh. Their larger focal length makes it possible to compress the planes and obtain a softer and more aesthetic background blur.

Tips

– Experiment with different openings to obtain the desired effect.
– Play with the distance between your subject and the background to create an interesting composition.
– Use fixed-length lenses with a large aperture to obtain a pronounced bokeh.
– Remember that the depth of field may vary depending on the focusing distance.
– Take into account the size of your device’s sensor to anticipate this depth.

Conclusion

Depth of field is a powerful tool for creating impactful images. By understanding the different parameters that influence it, you will be able to master this aspect of photography and obtain professional results. Do not hesitate to experiment and practice to find your own style and create unique images.
